The Great Western Greenway

The Great Western Greenway is a moderate, leisurely and family friendly off-road and traffic free cycling and walking route from Westport to Achill Island along the Wild Atlantic Way on Irelands glorious west coast. The Great Western Greenway route in County Mayo is a 45 km (27 miles) long trail that begins in Westport and ends on Achill Island, passing through the great towns of Newport and Mulranny along the coast of the picturesque and unique Clew Bay. It is currently Ireland’s longest off-road greenway trail intended for use by both cyclists and walkers and the route follows the old coastal railway line which was constructed in the 1890s and closed in 1937. This is one of Ireland’s best traffic free cycle and walking routes and it offers you world class views across Clew bay with the famous Croagh Patrick mountain (764m) in the background.

The trail officially begins in Westport but it can be done in either direction and you can join the route at any number of points along its length. To cycle the entire route from Westport to Achill is a moderate one day cycle.  You can always break up the route into a number of stages and stay overnight in the great towns along the way. This will allow everyone irrespective of fitness, time available or families to experience one of the best trails in Ireland. The trail is well signposted and directional arrows to show you the way, so you can’t get lost.  The route has much to offer with many attractions and interesting places to see, plenty of things to do and nice places to stay along the way.

From South to North the 3 main stages include:

  • Stage 1 – Westport to Newport
  • Stage 2 – Newport to Mulranny
  • Stage 3 – Mulranny to Achill Island
  • Entire Route
